We have to get over the idea that stress is part and parcel of a lawyer’s life – it isn’t. Yes, there is the thrill of the case, the intellectual challenge of complex law but stress due to overwork and unattainable targets is wrong.

When mental health is shaking off stigma in the wider world, it’s staggering to think that so few of the 90% of lawyers experiencing stress are able to discuss it with their employer. Nearly a quarter of young lawyers are already experiencing severe and extreme stress. If this continues we will lose talent, old and young and the legal industry will suffer. Well done to the Law Society's Junior Lawyers for championing this issue, and hopefully its upcoming report will deliver better news.
