"....There has been a Government plan for many years to replace criminal law solicitors in private practice with public defenders paid and administered along similar lines as the CPS. .."

There has but the Public Defenders Office was three times more expensive than private practice so the abandoned it I think?

"....Cheaper for the Government because like the CPS it will be very poorly funded. ..."

They will never underfund the CPS and if you have consummate bureaucrats in it at the top looking to make their mark with unlimited public funds, the result will be very interesting as with disclosure at the mo in rape (it was not just rape btw) ....

"....There are many good quality advocates ( solicitors and barristers) who have not practi[s]ed criminal law for years because of the never ending cuts. .."

That is true of many of us. However we were all responsible for abolishing Central Funds which allowed us to really push the Prosecution case and crack it.

".....One day there will be more money to spend but by then the talent will have been lost for a generation. ..."

It needs another Birmingham (the police [by then also prosecution] must have lied), Six, Guilford Four and Macguire Seven.....

Just waiting for the inevitable occurrence myself....

Scruff.
