I could just, only just, see an argument in favour of conveyancing and portal/fast track PI work (where it's fixed fees anyway). Even those, it's a stretch and of course what other professional service has costs published?

However, for the other areas it becomes (obviously) meaningless. To have a published price for defending a wrongful dismissal case? As Marshall says, it will just end up with huge brackets with firms saying it could be anything from £50-£50,000, possibly a lot more if you end up in the Supreme court (Pimlico anyone?)

There will inevitably, indeed will have to be so many caveats on any figures they will be immediately meaningless. At the same time, it will be a PR nightmare for the profession - look at how much these solicitors are earning, with everyone of course only looking at the top figures and seeing that as pure profit.

And of course it will end up being a stick to hit the little firms with, and at absolute best will be just more regulatory overhead that already hits smaller firms disproportionately.
