So what is poverty? People sleeping in doorways as they have nowhere else to live? Families lining up outside food-banks as they do not have enough money for food. Larger numbers than ever of children receiving free-school meals? Strangely we do have poverty in the UK. Even wealthy Boroughs like Kensington & Chelsea have pockets of extreme poverty. There is a relationship between poverty and the need for advice. If you do not understand the ridiculously complex benefits system you need advice. Equally if you are homeless you may well need advice on how to apply for Social housing. Those living in squalor in homes which badly need disrepair require legal advice. As poverty has taken hold in the UK our Legal Aid system has withered. And it may well continue to do so unless steps are taken to revive it.
