Nothing here is new. I remember attending Young Legal Aid Lawyers events back in 2007, and it was painfully clear both the (then Labour) government had no interest or incentive to fund the system, and that the young lawyers attendings were suffering from extreme wishful thinking. I opted for a career in the City, instead.

Things have only got worse since then. Why are people pursuing a chimera - a fully-funded, functioning old-fashioned legal aid system, if it's simply not going to happen? Wouldn't it be more sensible to replace the current system with an expanded Public Defender Service. This exists in some areas - see https://publicdefenderservice.org.uk/advocates/ - why shouldn't we simply expand that?
