Does anyone else remember that the current position, and the practices that are based on it, all derive from a piece of legislation called "The Statute of Frauds". It was intended to deal with people trying to extract money from other people by alleging that contracts existed, which may have done, or may well not have done.

I strongly suspect Mrs Wheeler doesn't know that. Possibly, even if she did, she wouldn't care.
