Efforts to make the judiciary more diverse are bearing fruit, if an exchange between Mr Justice Chamberlain and an unrepresented party in the High Court today is anything to go by.

‘You look awfully young to be a High Court judge, sir,’ said Luke McKay arriving a few minutes late due to train problems for a hearing in an action brought over the alleged reselling of Wimbledon tickets. Chamberlain J looked a little startled by the unconventional approach, but took it as a compliment. ‘That’s awfully kind of you to say,’ he replied.

Obiter can confirm that the judge, who took up appointment on the High Court bench in October, not only looks on the young side but is in fact on the young side (depending on what age bracket you sit in). He's 45.
