There are now only 300 Dartmoor Heritage ponies roaming on Dartmoor. The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust is dedicated to ensuring they remain on their moorland home.
For over 20 years, our small charity has been making a big difference on Dartmoor. We deliver nature conservation, support for pony owners and education sessions. Our work is powered by volunteers, members, and donors who share our vision of a thriving Dartmoor, where ponies, people, and wildlife flourish together.
Dartmoor pony herds have roamed the moor for a thousand years. The breed is well suited to the harsh conditions of high moorland staying out on the moor year-round. They are integral to the health of the moor helping to create a biodiverse habitat.
The benefits of pony grazing are studied at the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust managed site at Bellever in the heart of Dartmoor. Ponies help control the purple moor grass which now dominates large parts of Dartmoor where it reduces biodiversity by outcompeting other plants. Thanks to conservation grazing by Dartmoor ponies, native heather and bilberry are now thriving and support many species of insects, reptiles and birds. 10 endangered species of bird have now returned to our site, showing that Dartmoor ponies can help reverse the decline in biodiversity on the moor.
By leaving a gift in your will, you can help protect the Dartmoor Heritage pony and restore their beautiful moorland home.
