The Law Society has issued new best practice guidelines for solicitors dealing with major disasters.
In the procedures, the Society stresses the importance of high levels of co-operation between both sides and all lawyers engaged in complex actions, as well as early settlement of claims where possible and concessions on indefensible issues.
The Society plays a co-ordinating role in cases involving several claimants.
The guidelines apply when a sudden or unexpected event occurs which affects a group of individuals, resulting in physical injury or property damage.
The guidelines aim to improve communication between both sides, establish timetables for the exchange of information, avoid duplication and reduce delays and costs.
Solicitors involved in disaster litigation are required to contact and register with the Law Society's multi-party actions information service, tel: 0870 606 2522.
