A Birmingham firm has been broken up and sold after administrators were brought in to handle the business.

Glaisyers LLP confirmed on its website that administrators from Opus Restructuring were appointed last week: family and care cases have been transferred to Cartwright King and civil litigation work is now with Davisons Law.

Colin White, managing director with Ortus Group, which helped to arrange the transfer of ongoing cases, said the deal will save the majority of jobs at Glaisyers and ensure continuity for clients.

‘It is so important that we worked swiftly on this to ensure the SRA had no reason to intervene as that would have been a far worse and horrifically expensive outcome for everyone,’ added White.

The firm in administration is not related in any way to north-west firm Glaisyers ETL.

According to its accounts for 2023/24, Glaisyers LLP employed 21 people and had net assets of £184,000, which had halved compared to the previous year. Cash reserves had been reduced from around £9,600 to £466 and the value of the work in progress was down from £791,000 to £643,000.

The firm handled family law, wills, trust and probate, litigation and prison law. Partner David Simon joined the firm in 1990 and became a director in 2005. He was joined as a director by family law partner Suzanne Neale in 2018.

Neale, who is now head of the care team at Cartwright King, posted on Linkedin: ‘Having been established for 150 years, Glaisyers sadly closed its offices last week for the final time. I first started working at the firm 19 years ago and will always be grateful for the opportunity that Antonia Smith and David Simon gave me back then to join the team and to train and qualify, and then in 2018 to become a partner.

‘It has been a truly wonderful place to work, and the firm has helped so many people and families in Birmingham.’
