Deals of the week - 20.03.2003

Most cinematic deal: Clifford Chance acted for the management of Odeon Cinemas and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for Cinven on their 431 million sale of Odeon Cinemas to a consortium made up of WestLB (advised by US firm Weil Gotshal & Manges), The Entertainment Group (Richards Butler), Lehman Brothers (Allen & Overy) and Robert Tchenquiz (Linklaters).

Best constructed deal: Newbury firm Charles Lucas & Marshall acted for the management in the 3.2 million buy-out of scaffolding contractor Anglewest.

Banbury firm Spratt Endicott advised the vendor while M4 practice Morgan Cole acted for Bank of Scotland, which provided part funding.

Most watery deal: West London firm WPF Glasner Gerber Shapiro acted for Ampurius Holdings on the 20 million sale of a 1.6 acre site at Canada Water in London's Docklands to George Wimpey Central London, advised by the Cambridge office of Eversheds.

Most remote deal: London firm Davenport Lyons acted for Remote Reward, a privately owned French venture capitalist firm specialising in wireless technology companies, on its sale of high-speed wireless Internet access provider Megabeam Networks to Swisscom, advised by Allen & Overy.

KLegal acted for Megabeam.

Most adventurous deal: Manchester firm Halliwell Landau represented Karrimor International on its acquisition of 15 stores from the administrators of YHA Adventure Shops, advised by City- based solicitors DLA.

Tastiest deal: Carlisle firm Burnetts acted for Border Vending Group, a supplier of new and used vending machines, to Coffee Point, advised by London firm Collyer-Bristow.

Finance was provided by AIB, represented by Penningtons, and 3i, advised by Addleshaw Booth & Co.

Most uplifting deal: North-west firm Brabners Chaffe Street acted for Material Handling on the 700,000 purchase of a 100-strong fleet of fork lift trucks from Fork Truck Warehouse (Briarswood) Ltd, advised by Liverpool firm EAD Solicitors.

Clarification: Burnley firm SFN Solicitors acted for Formula One driver Justin Wilson and his family and City firm Howard Kennedy acted for Justin Wilson plc on the issue of 1.2 million of shares (see [2003] Gazette, 13 March, 8).
