The main representative bodies from the legal and insurance worlds today launched a guide to help solicitors buy professional indemnity insurance (PII) cover.

The guide, put together by the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Law Society, offers guidance on choosing brokers and insurers, the workings of the PII market, completing proposal forms, and difficulties in obtaining PII. It also contains information about rights and responsibilities in the renewal process, including how to make a complaint.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, said: ‘This guidance, with its emphasis on how solicitors can get the right information to brokers and insurers, will help build a more robust, competitive and sustainable market for professional indemnity insurance.’

Law Society chief executive Des Hudson said that he hopes the guide will alleviate some of the pressures of the renewal process.

The guidance is available here in pdf format.
