The government intends to clamp down on compensation claims arising from road traffic accidents. Apparently, the government regards solicitors as the ‘bad guys’ and insurers as the ‘good guys’.

But what about the following example. Last week, I concluded a personal injury claim on behalf of an 88-year-old lady in Birmingham. She had boarded a bus operated by the defendants, and was making her way to her seat. Before waiting for her to sit down, the bus driver accelerated sharply. My client was thrown to the ground, suffering serious injuries. Loss adjusters attempted to negotiate with her direct, offering £1,250.

My client became suspicious and sought independent legal advice. Settlement was achieved for the entirely fair sum of £25,000. Where does this common scenario fit in with the government’s naive world view?
