On the frontline against fear
Stones thrown through windows and threats of violence should not, in a civilised society, form part of a lawyer's professional existence. But, as we report today, (see page 1) such attacks are becoming expected by solicitors who are acting for unpopular clients or against aggressive opposition.Measures should be taken to protect lawyers from yobs.
And the Law Society is right to be considering guidance and a support network for vulnerable practitioners.
But as unpleasant as individual physical attacks are, the legal profession should be proud of the fact that even in such uncertain and potentially volatile times, its members are prepared to put themselves at risk in the name of upholding the rule of law.Senior members of the American Bar Association have suggested that some freedoms in the US may have to be curtailed in the fight against terrorism.
While having sympathy for their position, such a suggestion is worrying. It is encouraging to see lawyers in this country recognising that they are at the front line of defending the ideals terrorists would snuff out.
