QualitySolicitors.com, the legal marketing brand, marked its launch this week with a symbolic demonstration outside the Royal Courts of Justice against the prospect of supermarkets offering legal services – so called ‘Tesco law’.

Participants shouted ‘Say no to Tesco law’ and handed out cans of beans labelled: ‘Legal services by supermarkets is as ridiculous as lawyers selling beans.’

QualitySolicitors, which has 100 members, was set up to help small and medium-sized firms prepare for the challenges posed by the Legal Services Act, which will allow organisations such as supermarkets to offer legal services.

Chief executive Saleem Arif said the idea for the protest came from a government minister’s remark at the time of the act: ‘I don’t see why consumers should not be able to get legal services as easily as they can buy a tin of beans.’

Tesco said it had no plans to step up its presence in the legal services market.
