Former solicitor Andrew Rutherford Warren was last week sentenced to between 20 months and five years in prison for enterprise corruption after admitting guilt in a case in New York.

Warren was extradited to the US recently following his indictment for enterprise corruption there in 1999.

Formerly a partner with now-defunct London firm Talbot Creggy & Co, Warren was arrested in London in 1998 with fellow partner Stuart Creggy following a joint UK and US investigation into money laundering.

Warren was accused of being a member of a criminal enterprise which - with Creggy - violated securities, banking and tax laws.

The frauds made more than $20 million.

Creggy was found guilty in New York following a 19-day trial last December.

Authorities in New York said he was fined $6,000 (3,400) and given probation for five years in February this year.

His lawyers are set to appeal.

A source at the New York District Attorney's office said Warren could be eligible for parole and deportation after serving ten months of his sentence.

The Gazette was unable to contact Warren's US attorney, Martin Auerback, for comment.
