The Supreme Court will cost £56.9 million to set up, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced - £20 million higher than it previously stated.

According to figures released this week, it will cost £36.7 million to transform Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court into the new home for the law lords and the judicial committee of the Privy Council. The additional money will cover professional adviser fees, programme team costs, furniture, IT services and library costs.

The current law lords will be the first justices of the 12-member Supreme Court and will remain members of the House of Lords once the court is created. New judges appointed after its creation will not be members of the House of Lords. The building is expected to open in October 2009.
