South West London Law Centres hosted a ‘thank you’ event this month, reuniting over 100 people who have helped shape the group over the past five decades.
Immigration team leader Pradeep Kumar recalled walking through SWLLC’s doors 20 years ago, full of hope and uncertainty. What he found was a team ‘quietly and with great determination, working not for headlines, not for glory, but because they believed in something – that no one should face the legal system alone’. Tom Chapman, who works in the admin team, said his friends were in awe of the work SWLLC does to achieve ‘life-changing’ outcomes for clients – clients such as a homeless pregnant teen who now has a ‘safe place to call home’.
The event provided the perfect opportunity for SWLLC to unveil a new Friends Network. Strategic development manager Chofian Abobakr told Obiter the network will be ‘a space to stay up to date with our work, connect with one another, and reflect on the collective effort that has brought us to this point, the lives changed through this work, and the role of this community in shaping its future’.
Here’s to another 50 years.
