Frankly, we’re surprised it has taken this long. A New York judge has ruled that a woman can serve divorce papers on her husband through a Facebook message.

According to newspaper reports, the couple, originally from Ghana, married in a civil ceremony in 2009 but the relationship promptly turned sour.

The husband has no known physical address and a private detective has failed to track him down. The Manhattan Supreme Court granted permission for papers to be transmitted through a private message on the social networking site ‘once a week for three consecutive weeks, or until acknowledged’.

Despite the fact that Facebook has been around for a decade, the press accounts say this is a first. Is it?
