Readers may be aware of the computer science educator John Lewis – or more specifically his Twitter handle @johnlewis.

Lewis, from the US state of Virginia, shows remarkable patience and no little humour in batting away a constant stream of misdirected complaints about the retail store.

There are a couple of legal equivalents. Maths teacher Chris Grayling (not pictured) had plenty of feedback during his namesake’s time as justice secretary, while @SecretBarrister, silent on social media since 2014, is regularly sent messages intended for the more vocal @BarristerSecret.

Obiter’s favourite is holder of the @hmcts handle, listed on Twitter as Suzie from Derbyshire.

Poor Suzie is regularly contacted by court users failing to use the correct @HMCTSgovuk name – and more so during various systems and security failures in recent months. Since the turn of the year, Suzie has received complaints about the phone service at Northampton and delays for SSCS appeals in Sheffield, but has at least been thanked for security measures at Croydon Crown Court. Suzie, who has not tweeted since October 2013, remains steadfastly silent in the face of such correspondence.

We can assure readers that @ObiterGazette is the real thing.
