Last year lord chancellor Chris Grayling gave legal aid lawyers and their clients a gift they didn’t want on his birthday. Much of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act came into force on 1 April, removing legal aid for huge swathes of law.

This year, practitioners are getting their own back – the second of their two-day walkout falls on April Fools’ Day. Obiter suspects the lawyers will have a treat in store for the birthday boy – it may even be delivered by the papier-mache likeness.
