The Lib Dems seem curiously keen to distance themselves from the actions of the government – involving a sort of double-think that Simon Hughes MP seems adept at.

The justice minister neglected this week to publicy mention the civil court fees increase which comes into force on Monday.

But the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP was concerned with court fees of a different kind: tennis courts.

Yesterday – the day after court fee increases were confirmed in parliament – Hughes (or @SimonHughes, as we must now call him) was moved to retweet the following: ‘A sad day for tennis as fees introduced at Tanner St makes a mockery of Southwark Council’s free gym access plans.’

One can only hope Southwark Council will have the sense to follow the MoJ’s lead and cap fees at £10,000.
