A Family Court judgment over financial remedies proceedings arising out of a divorce saw His Honour Judge Edward Hess note, when discussing the history of the case, a ‘certain irony’ in the listing in 10 months’ time of the hearing of a contested application for an eight-month adjournment.

Maybe it can be added to the Canadian crooner’s song, though it doesn’t quite have the same ring as having a black fly in your chardonnay, rain on your wedding day, or 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife.

Nevertheless, Obiter would argue it’d be a worthy addition, not least because court delays, be they for whatever reason, are arguably far more frustrating – and costly – than a free ride when you’ve already paid.
