It’s 2am in the HM Courts & Tribunals Service boardroom. Executives and beancounters slump exhausted over a pile of spreadsheets and half-eaten sandwiches. ‘It’s no good, chief, I can’t make the sums add up. We’re going to have to live with leaking roofs.’

Suddenly, a commotion. Enter a fresh-faced management consultant. ‘I think… I think I’ve got it,’ she stutters breathlessly. 'How much are we spending on stamps?'

Yes, one of the headline ‘modernisation’ wheezes for HMCTS unveiled in this week’s budget is ‘reducing spend on first class post’. Of course at a soon-to-be price of £1.35 a stamp, postage is no laughing matter. Especially as Royal Mail delivery is a lottery. But we’d love to hear of any examples of HMCTS extravagance in this – or any other – department.
