Barrister Robert Rinder, better known as Judge Rinder, has form for displaying inappropriate gavels. His long-running ITV show featured him in a courtroom decorated with a gavel and union flag, despite neither being part of the furniture in British courts. He was even presented with a golden gavel to mark his 1,000th show in 2018.

Rinder’s latest venture sticks with the winning formula. The cover of his debut novel The Trial features the rogue hammer - even though the 'gripping whodunnit' is set in the Old Bailey.

The Trial is out today and, judging by the early reviews, set to be a big hit. We look forward to reading it ourselves, even if we might have to gloss over that cover image.
