To a chorus of hoots from irate taxi drivers, Legal London's main thoroughfare closed this morning for the first of three days of events aiming to lure workaholic lawyers from their terminals.

A programme of ‘vibrant activities, music and food’ has been arranged by the City of London Corporation as part of its Lunchtime Streets initiative. Chancery Lane will be closed to traffic from Carey Street to Southampton Buildings from 10.30am to 3pm today, tomorrow and Thursday, to promote ‘safer, healthier, people-friendly streets for everyone to enjoy’. Among the attractions, we are assured, will be an outdoor petanque court courtesy of our neighbour Barani's cocktail bar.

Obiter will be fearlessly reporting from the scene.
