Gazette still on the case

The Gazette this year enters its 100th year of providing news for the legal profession. The Law Society’s Gazette and Register was first published in November 1903. It was produced continuously through both world wars.

Closing down ‘libel Las Vegas’

Libel experts have broadly welcomed the lord chancellor’s proposals to make libel actions cheaper and quicker. The proposals could put an end to so-called ‘gold-digging’ actions and deter foreign litigants, some of who have long regarded London as the world’s ‘libel Las Vegas’, they believe.

Freedom of movement in the EEC

A quarter of a century after the entry into force of the treaty establishing the European Economic Community, the interpretation of its provisions governing freedom of movement for persons (including in particular workers) remains a matter of very considerable significance and controversy. In 1981, cases on the subject formed one of the categories outnumbering all others brought before the Court of Justice of the European Communities.

Proceedings against NHOS

The Law Society has caused a total of 23 summonses to be issued against three members of the National House Owners Society. All the summonses allege breaches of the Solicitors Act 1957, in that being unqualified persons they drew or prepared an instrument relating to real estate. The offences relate to properties as far apart as Devon and Cumberland.
