Land Registry for sale
The government has revived proposals to sell HM Land Registry to the private sector. Under a ‘preferred model’ proposed by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, the register will remain Crown property but all core functions will be transferred to a ‘NewCo’ which will be auctioned off. A previous privatisation plan was abandoned in 2014.

India practice case transfers
The Indian Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal by City firm Ashurst Morris Crisp of a decision allowing a challenge to the firm’s right to practise in India. This is the latest development in the case brought by the Bombay Lawyers Collective claiming that three firms are practising illegally in India.

Personal injuries litigation
The system is inefficient. It is dilatory. And it is disproportionately expensive. There is nothing in the Inbucon report, published by the Lord Chancellor’s Department, to suggest that minor adjustments might achieve the changes which are needed. Worthwhile improvements will require radical changes to procedure, jurisdiction and forensic methods.

Fair compensation for dependants
The disparity between awards of damages for wrongful death in the US and those made in this country was thrown into sharp relief by the recent award of $1,505,000 to the dependants of two victims of the Paris DC-10 air disaster.

Telex
The council have decided to install Telex at the Law Society’s Hall, both for the use of the Society and its members. It is envisaged that messages will be taken from members over the telephone for transmission by Telex to recipients who possess Telex and the replies will then be communicated by telephone to the member concerned.
