It’s not just Santa who is making a list and checking it twice. Justice minister Simon Hughes, the lone Lib Dem in the Ministry of Justice, revealed at last week’s party conference that he is making a ‘careful note’ of ideas that his Tory colleagues have come up with but not implemented.

Hughes told a fringe meeting that he had to be ‘eternally vigilant’ and scrutinise ‘every bit of paper that comes across my desk’.

At the conference, Hughes said that ‘never in my dreams’ did he imagine being a government minister. He then went on to leave delegates with a rather unsettling image: ‘Never in my nightmares – even my wildest nightmares – did I imagine going to bed with the Tories and waking up with Chris Grayling.’

It is not impossible that the feeling is reciprocal.
