Legal PR is no stranger to hyperbole but a comment by the global chair of Dentons this week reached new heights of self-aggrandisement. In a press release announcing a tie-up with firms in Australia and Singapore, Joe Andrew did not hold back on his firm’s accomplishments.

‘By any objective standard, Dentons has accomplished more for our clients in one year than any other firm in recent history,’ he claimed, adding: ‘and the year is not over yet.’

Obiter suspects that rival firms might contest the objectivity of ‘any standard’. But for a business that is merging with Chinese firm Dacheng, whose name in English translates roughly as ‘giant success’, it is perhaps unsurprising that modesty is not Dentons’ strong suit.
