★★★✩✩

What secrets lurk in the attic? Solicitor Laurie Dunn, who returns home to support her ageing parent, is the heroine of this psychological tale. The story is shared with Finn Ballentine, another lawyer who is looking for a fresh start. Both characters face challenges. This is a good story – set in a legal world – with believable characters. And there is a surprise ending.

England is a former solicitor turned author. Having studied law at the University of Manchester and trained mainly in crime and family work, on qualification, England decided to specialise in matrimonial/divorce work before switching to professional indemnity law.

This is her 14th novel. England is known for writing stories that delve into complicated relationships, secrets and moral grey areas. Her literary characters get caught up in extraordinary situations, moral dilemmas and crime. She also writes gothic-tinged thrillers under the name of C E Rose.

Behind Her Smile moves at a lively pace, switching between the perspectives of the two main characters.
