Essential Magistrates’ Courts Law (second edition)

★★★★★
In this highly readable and concise book, many developments in criminal law since the publication of the first edition in 2019 are included, such as the Sentencing Act 2020.
The book takes the reader through the life of a case from first appearance, bail, trial, sentencing (including ancillary orders) and tackles legal and procedural issues that may arise along the way. There are particularly helpful sections on hearsay evidence, the ever-vexed issue of disclosure and how to deal with applications to adjourn on the day of trial, with a reminder that the relevant considerations as to that are in the practice direction, not any longer in the large body of case law.
Common offences and defences are set out, with a welcome treatment of frequently encountered protest offences.
The authors have a wealth of experience in the criminal law and in the work of the magistrates’ court. I would highly recommend this book to any practitioner and judge.
Adrian Lower is a district judge (magistrates’ court)
