Current Law Society president Mark Evans is to become chief executive of LawCare in November, the mental health charity announced today. He will succeed Trish McLellan, LawCare’s director of engagement, who becomes interim chief executive from 1 July, taking over from Elizabeth Rimmer.

Ian Jeffery, Law Society chief executive, said: 'As the current president of the Law Society, Mark is one of the most visible advocates for mental health and wellbeing in the profession and has personally championed the important work LawCare does. We are therefore delighted that once his presidential year has been completed in October, he will move into the role of CEO at LawCare. We all look forward to working with him in that new way when he takes up post later this year.'

Jeffery paid tribute to Rimmer for her work in raising awareness of the mental health and wellbeing issues facing legal professionals: 'It has been great to work with her and we wish her the best for the future.'

LawCare offers free, confidential emotional support, peer support and information for people in the legal sector in the UK, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. It also advocates for improvements in mental health practices in legal workplaces and collaborates with educators, regulators and professional bodies to address what it says is a growing body of research showing how accepted working practices and culture in law undermine mental health.
