A north-west law firm will next week launch a website that offers the full range of consumer legal services 24 hours a day, for a fixed fee.
Canter Levin & Berg claims to be the first firm to provide a full range of services online.
The website, lawoptions.co.uk, will offer advice on areas such as family, employment, road traffic accidents and personal injury, conveyancing, and wills and probate.
Users will be able to speak to a trained caseworker around the clock to go through the initial claim, while a qualified adviser will be available from 8am to 8pm for the next stage of the process. The service offers fixed fees for divorce, routine wills, conveyancing and speeding offences, while personal injury cases will be done on a ‘no win, no fee’ basis. Other work will be costed individually, but with the client informed of the price at the outset.
Louise Burns-Lunt, finance director at Canter Levin & Berg, said the website was a response to the growing threat to commoditised work from big brands. She said: ‘We set up focus groups with consumers, and they told us they wanted advice when it suits them, and they wanted to know how much it would cost from the outset.’
She added: ‘For products that are easily packaged, solicitors are going to have to be more innovative. Those who stand still will find that this work is taken off them.’
Burns-Lunt said the firm had invested a ‘six-figure sum’ in the project. She said it had ensured that staff answering calls were fully trained.
Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire firm Fidler & Pepper claimed to be the first law firm to develop its own iPhone web application for online clients, making it possible for users to access its case tracking service from their iPhone.
