In a further sign of the opening of the Indian legal market to international collaboration, the country’s seventh largest firm, INDUSLAW, has joined forces with international firm CMS. Under the arrangement, INDUSLAW remains an independent firm under the CMS brand.
The firms said INDUSLAW lawyers will support multinational CMS clients looking to enter and operate in the world's fourth-largest economy, while more than 6,800 CMS lawyers in over 45 countries around the world will support clients wanting to expand internationally from India.
INDUSLAW has a presence across India’s principal commercial hubs, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai. The firm has 60 partners and more than 400 lawyers.
This announcement comes ahead of the opening of the Indian market to foreign firms, expected following an announcement by the Bar Council of India earlier this month. The change in regulations will, for the first time, permit foreign lawyers and law firms to practise in India under specific conditions.
Duncan Weston, CMS executive partner, said: ‘This is a significant step in CMS’s expansion across Asia and globally. With India’s economy being increasingly integrated into the global economic system, the need for agile, forward-thinking legal advisers capable of bridging local and international jurisdictions has never been more critical.'
In a joint statement, Avimukt Dar, Gaurav Dani, Kartik Ganapathy and Suneeth Katarki, INDUSLAW founding partners, added: 'This is another milestone in the history of our firm. While we will continue on our journey as a leading full-service Indian law firm delivering exceptional client service and thought leadership, we now also enjoy the support of CMS to bring to the table the ability to offer a coordinated global offering for our clients. We look forward to driving growth, innovation and collaboration across borders.'
In 2022, international firm Dentons became the first global practice to tie up with a major Indian firm, Link Legal, in a Swiss verein-model combination.
