The Society was gratified to welcome the lady chief justice to Monday’s 200th birthday party celebration in London, along with other luminaries including the solicitor general and former justice committee chair Sir Bob Neill.
Baroness Carr is certainly tireless in her peregrinations, for she has also been back to school. The LCJ recently visited Outwood Academy Riverside, a secondary school in Middlesbrough, to talk to pupils about the work of judges, the justice system and the rule of law. The visit is part of the judiciary’s School and Universities Engagement Programme, which seeks to encourage students from all backgrounds to consider a career in the justice system.
Diversity in the law’s top echelons has gone into reverse in recent decades, which makes the initiative especially urgent. School principal Melissa Brant-Smith said: ‘We are truly grateful for her visit. I hope this experience will inspire our students and encourage more of them to a future career in the judiciary.’ Yes indeed.
