French president Emmanuel Macron’s touting of Paris as natural post-Brexit successor to the City of London did not pass unnoticed in Blighty. And certainly not by a fellow president – Nick Emmerson of the Law Society. To summarise, Emmerson assured those convening for Chancery Lane’s reception at the swanky Pavillon Gabriel, off the Place de la Concorde, that there’s life in the old British bulldog yet.

An entente cordiale still holds, we are pleased to report, notwithstanding this little local difficulty. UK lawyers and firms remain particularly grateful for France’s decision to remain an open jurisdiction. As Emmerson noted, 32 UK firms have branch offices in Paris; so that was no small concession.
