Solicitors threaten to quit duty rotas

Furious criminal law practitioners are threatening to withdraw en masse from duty solicitor rotas if proposed changes to the way they are paid for police station work go ahead. The warning came as the Legal Services Commission’s consultation on the new funding arrangements ended, and coincided with other duty solicitors suggesting they might down tools during the Queen’s golden jubilee celebrations next month.

Thumbs down for Euro rights report

A report recommending that the Law Society support the incorporation of the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law was rejected by the council on the grounds that all the arguments central to the issue had not been explored. Several council members said that the Society should steer clear of ‘political’ issues.

For the young solicitors’ group there came support from an unexpected quarter last week when Mr Arthur Lewis (Lab) rose to ask the attorney general to take action to recommend the abolition of Queen’s counsel. The attorney general, himself a QC, said he was not persuaded that costs would be reduced if QCs were abolished.
