Legal Aid Agency ‘in denial’ over online billing system
A new digital legal aid billing system could cause payment delays that will affect the viability of firms unless underlying issues are urgently fixed, costs lawyers have warned. The Client Cost and Management System was piloted in the north-east two years ago and will become mandatory in October.

Lawyers triumph in election
Seven more solicitors won seats in parliament at last week’s general election, meaning there are now 31 solicitors at Westminster. As expected, David Gauke, until recently an assistant at City firm Macfarlanes, and former City solicitor Shailesh Vara took over the safe Tory seats of Hertfordshire South and Cambridgeshire North West. Human rights solicitor Sadiq Khan saw a 10,000 majority halved, but was still returned in Tooting for Labour.

Bar wars
Radical proposals which would change the whole structure of the bar will go before the barristers’ AGM next month. The meeting will be asked to vote on proposals to allow direct access to the public in all areas and allow barristers to form partnerships with each other and with solicitors.

Education and training
It has been announced that the Council intend that from 1980 the normal mode of entry into the profession shall be by way of a degree - not necessarily, but probably, a law degree. There will, however, still be a way into the profession for mature students.

Honours and awards
Flower, Richard Talbot, Captain, 47th Commando, Royal Marines, awarded the Military Cross for courage and devotion to duty in the landing at Walcheren. He was admitted in 1939 and is associated with the firm of Kingsford, Flower & Pain, of Ashford, Kent.
