It turns out Obiter was wrong when we predicted that Dominic Raab MP would get more than one wear out of his swearing-in robes. The ceremony today was a very low-key affair, without the usual spectacle of the tipstaff and mace-bearer processing up Carey Street.

HM Judiciary explained: 'The lord chancellor and lord chief justice have agreed that the swearing-in will not take place in open court as Dominic Raab had previously been sworn-in as lord chancellor on 23 September 2021.' Instead 'a short, private ceremony'  at the Royal Courts of Justice.

Thus no speeches or formal address, 'only the necessary constitutional procedures to enable the lord chancellor to swear his oath of office in accordance with the Constitutional Reform Act'.

Never mind; we're sure the robes will get another public airing in due course.
