In 1956, our founder Richard Carr-Gomm recognised the growing need for connection and community among older adults. He envisioned a network of safe and friendly homes where older people could maintain their independence while forming friendships and finding support. He invested his own money in the first Abbeyfield house, and more houses were founded through the generosity of many supporters.

Age UK believes every older person should be included and valued. We’re working locally, nationally and internationally to change the way we age. We transform older people’s wellbeing in the ways that matter most to them – whether that’s getting online or getting more active.
