The Attorney General’s Office has officially begun the search for a new director of public prosecutions – who will be paid £225,978 to lead the Crown Prosecution Service.

The salary is a slight increase on what current DPP Max Hill KC is paid.

According to the CPS’s 2021/22 annual report and accounts, Hill is on a salary of £215,000-£220,000. He also receives £84,000 in pension benefits, making his total remuneration £300,000-£305,000.

Hill will step down from the role in October, which marks the end of his five-year term.

His achievements include securing extra cash from HM Treasury to restore parity in fees between prosecution and defence barristers following the £54m deal that the Ministry of Justice agreed with the criminal bar to end long-running industrial action.

Hill was today praised by attorney general Victoria Prentis. She said: ‘Max Hill has provided the CPS with strong leadership throughout his tenure as Director of Public Prosecutions. He has successfully navigated the challenges brought by the pandemic and made significant progress in transforming the organisation’s approach to prosecuting rape and serious sexual offences. The CPS is also improving victim support in these complex cases.’
